SCLEOA Awards Information

The Annual SCLEOA Awards Program was created to provide an opportunity for individual officers, departments and heroic citizens to be given their deserved recognition.  Each award has been developed to honor the outstanding accomplishments of law enforcement officers, departments and citizens for their efforts to perform above and beyond the call of duty.

The SCLEOA Awards and Commendations Committee reviews each nomination and selects the officer, department or citizen that most exemplifies the criteria of each award.

Please Note: 

Awards are presented at the Awards and Installation Banquet of the Annual Conference.   

All Awards Nominations must be submitted to SCLEOA by June 30, 2008.

The following awards are presented annually:

Law Enforcement Officer of the Year  (2007 winner)

This award honors the outstanding law enforcement officer in South Carolina for individual development and exceptional performance of duty, combined with distinguished community service.  The purpose of this award is to recognize the premier law enforcement officer in our state.  The SCLEOA Officer of the Year Award enhances the image of the law enforcement profession by focusing the spotlight on the professional success and good citizenship of the award winner.

The Awards Committee reviews nominees on the following criteria:

1.  Employment record
2.  Professional development
3.  Active SCLEOA participation
4.  Community contributions
5.  Civic involvement
6.  Honors, awards and achievements

All nominees for the Officer of the Year Award must meet these requirements:

1.  Be a member of SCLEOA
2.  Be employed full time as a law  enforcement officer          
3.  Have a minimum of five years experience in law enforcement  
4.  Be currently certified by the SC Criminal Justice Academy  

Santee Cooper Excellence in Law Enforcement  (2007 Winner)

This award, sponsored by Santee Cooper, recognizes the overall activities and achievements of an entire law enforcement agency or department.  The award recognizes the efforts of the entire team rather than those of an individual.  Major qualifications of the award are:  effort, innovative service to the community, efficiency, and results.  

Alltel Crime Prevention Award  (2007 winner)

This award, sponsored by Alltel, is presented annually to the agency or department with an outstanding crime prevention program.  The nominee must have a designated Crime Prevention Officer.  Criteria for selection include the total number of crime prevention programs resulting in a decreased crime rate.

Lifetime Achievement Award  (2007 winner (2006 winner)

This award recognizes the long term accomplishments and contributions of an individual that has earned the respect of the law enforcement community in South Carolina.  The award was developed to honor those who have served the law enforcement and public safety professions generously and unselfishly for at least twenty-five continuous years.  It is to commemorate exemplary talents and contributions as demonstrated by the nominee's dedication, loyalty, ability and integrity.  

Outstanding Citizen of the Year (2007 winner)

This annual award is presented to a South Carolina citizen who has placed him/herself in danger beyond what is expected of the average citizen to support the efforts of law enforcement or who has made exemplary efforts to support law enforcement and public safety in his/her community.  

Medal of Honor and Medal of Valor  (2007 winner)

Active SCLEOA members may receive the Medal of Honor by performing above and beyond the call duty an act of gallantry at imminent personal hazard to life with knowledge of the risk.  

Active SCLEOA members may receive the Medal of Valor for an act of outstanding bravery performed in the line of duty at imminent personal hazard to life under circumstances demonstrating a disregard of personal consequences.  

Procedures for nominations for Medal of Honor or Medal of Valor:

1.  A written recommendation shall be submitted to the Awards and Commendations Committee from the officer's immediate supervisor or other appropriate person recommending the officer receives a medal.  

2.  The recommendation should contain all pertinent information to justify the issuance of a medal

Woman of the Year Award:  (previous winners)

This award, sponsored by the SCLEOA Spouses Auxiliary, honors an outstanding woman each year.  Nominations are open to all SCLEOA female members and spouses of Association members with first consideration given to those who are members of the Spouses Auxiliary.  Procedures for nominations are:

1.  Written submission to the Spouses Auxiliary from the person or persons making the nomination.

2.  Nominations should include information regarding career, community service, involvement in the SCLEOA Spouses Auxiliary, Agency association and/or involvement, volunteer work, and any other information deemed pertinent.

3.  2008 Nominations which must be received by June 30th should be mailed to:
